The pandemic is gradually receding, and a review of medical literature from the height of Covid-19 waves I, II, and III indicated that no antiviral therapy has proven effective in lowering patient death.

According to a global study that included researchers from Hyderabad, antiviral medications used during the pandemic did not contribute to preventing mortality, even if they improved clinical outcomes. The highly in-demand Remdesivir had shortened the time to recovery, although the results were inconsistent.

The research team read 2,284 research publications as part of the project, and 31 studies, including 12,440 patients, were among them. The study′s findings were released in the journal BMC Infectious Diseases.

The study demonstrated that no antiviral therapy had effectively lowered Covid-19 mortality. Although statistical power was limited, the sofosbuvir/daclatasvir data revealed clinical improvement. Remdesivir showed effectiveness in shortening the time to recovery; however, the outcomes varied across trials.

The researchers concluded that although some antivirals have shown promise in improving clinical outcomes in Covid-19 patients, none have shown promise in lowering mortality.
